Barolo is widely regarded as Italy's greatest red wine, produced from the Nebbiolo grape on the clay and limestone hills of the Langhe around the town of Barolo in Piedmont. It is a wine of remarkable power, structure and longevity: high tannin, high acidity, deep colour and an aromatic complexity that evolves over decades from fresh cherry and tar on release to leather, roses, dried herbs, truffle and earth with age. Barolo must spend at least 38 months aging before release (62 months for Riserva), of which 18 months must be in oak. The wine is divided into 11 named vineyard zones (MGA), each with its own soil and microclimate. At Wines Direct we source Barolo from trusted producers who respect the Nebbiolo grape and the exceptional terroir of the Langhe.
