It’s hard to avoid an Ennio Morricone analogy when we talk about this exciting new winemaker on our list. Beautiful music and beautiful wine naturally draw comparison. However, we shall desist, in favour of a more informative, less cliché riddled profile, difficult though that is.

Finding the vineyards of Federico Morricone was one of the most difficult tasks on our last exploratory mission down the east coast of Italy. Medoro is a small village near Atri, located in the beautiful area of the Teramo hills, an ancient wine region overlooking the green adriatic sea. Of course beautiful vineyard country does not necessarily mean easy navigation and we spent a good hour driving over and back on meandering, dusty roads before finally Federico took pity on us and came to navigate us to her winery.

A relatively new addition to the Italian wine scene , Villamedoro is already a key player of the Abruzzo region. Thanks to the entrepreneurial spirit of Federico, Villamedoro is reaping a lot of acclaim and has sealed a position as provider of excellent wines from varietals such as Montepulciano, Trebbiano, Pecorino and Passerina, with the added bonus of one of the more modest pricings in the region.

This Montepulciano d’Abruzzo is a classic of the style. It’s generous body comes from 20 days resting on the skins during fermentation and it doesn’t see a splinter of oak in its creation, making it a very accessible, juicy and fruit forward wine. Federicos Montepulciano grapes are grown on soils of clay and lime and she makes the wine in a modern style with a focus on drinkability now, rather than in a decade. Delicious and excellent value for this level of quality.


Villamedoro owns 92 hectares of vines, divided into four bodies, cared for with peasant passion, but with the eye attentive to the most modern viticulture techniques. Traditional vineyards, raised in pergola.
