Vignobles Mayard is a stand-out property in the Rhône Valley’s most important appellation, Châteauneuf-du-Pape. On our last trip to her family run winery in the eponymous village, winemaker Francoise Mayard told us how it may never have existed were it not for her rather stubborn great-grandfather.
The Phylloxera epidemic that swept through France during the late 1800s was a plant disease to rival the Irish potato famine. Winemakers watched in despair as their vineyards died in front of their eyes and the French wine industry was brought to its knees. Many vignerons emigrated to New World destinations and Gratien Mayard, Francoise’s great-grandfather, was set to follow them.
In fact Gratien was on the cusp of boarding a US bound ship in 1923 when he finally relinquished to the pull of his home soil and stayed to work the land. According to Francoise, he painstakingly replanted the vineyards, vine by vine, and began making wine under the newly delimited Châteauneuf-du-Pape appellation. Today Francoise, with her sister, Beatrice, and brother, Didier, proudly maintain their family’s reputation for hard work and dedication but, Francoise says, they are always mindful of the sacrifice of previous generations.
Perhaps that explains their decision to eschew chemicals in the vineyards and to use more environmentally friendly, labour intensive methods. Careful attention is paid to the vines throughout the year with debudding and green harvesting essential. Respect is paid to the differing climats throughout Châteauneuf-du-Pape with each of their 40 parcels of land vinified separately.
Domaine du Pere Pape
The vineyard covers 43 hectares of vines that include two large plots: a 21-hectare area situated south of the Châteauneuf du Pape appellation, at Grand Coulet, and an 8-hectare area located to the east, on the famous Crau plateau. The entire estate covers around thirty parcels of land spread across highly diverse terroirs, some of them planted over a century ago.
