This family run winery is situated in the postcard perfect Austrian village, Langenlois, deep in the beautiful Kamptal Valley, Austria. This region is one of the most prestigious in Europe for rich and savoury Grüner Veltliner and, luckily, it is the speciality wine of this 25 hectare estate.
Karl Steininger’s family tree has a winemaker on almost every branch. This family history is a badge of honour for many great winemakers, including Karl, and it is what drives him on to ensure his wines are the best possible representation of their land.
Karl’s chief lesson to his children, the next generation of winemakers at Weingut Steininger, is that good wine cannot be rushed. It must be given the time it needs to develop, mature and evolve into the beautiful drink in front of us today. Perhaps it’s no surprise then that Philip Blom, the Austrian wine critic calls his Grüner Veltliner “a wine of aristocratic elegance”.
"A perfect example of the lighter refreshing style of Gruner, with green apple fruits and a crisp dry finish."
"White pepper spice notes overlay citrus fruitiness lent by mandarin and grapefruit"
"Fragrant with floral scents. Pithy citrus flavours with a mineral note for added interest. Partner with paupiettes of sole, stuffed with mushrooms."
"Orange zest and spice on the nose leads to a palate involving golden apples, mango and grapefruit, with some refreshing minerality."
The perfect combination of soil and climate lays the foundation of high-quality wines. The Kamp Valley offers a big variety of different combinations of these factors and thus yields wines with finesse and diversity. On one hand, we can rely on three different kinds of soil (bedrock, loess and clay) and on the other hand, the region presents us with its unique climate. Typically we experience hot summer days with cool nights and a long and sunny autumn season. These contrasting conditions give the Kamp Valley wines their unparalleled, crystal-clear, mineral character.
