Langhe DOC, Piedmont, Italy
This Nebbiolo is grown just outside the boundary of the famous Barolo region and, being made in the hands of a master, is great value. It shows vibrant plum and dark cherry on the nose and palate. The flavours linger for a long time on the finish which stays fresh with a hint of refreshing acidity and soft tannin.

Silvano Bolmida is one of the new breed in Monforte. Now almost forty years old, he worked for ten years as an enologist for another winery in Barolo before taking over the business founded by his father and mother, and now seeks to improve on what was already a standard.
The estate is relatively small and production was never big to begin with. One major decision by Silvano Bolmida was to drastically reduce yields by performing a green harvest in June, and to use organic winegrowing practices in the vineyards, without the need for pesticides or chemical fertilizers. At harvest time the grapes are given a fairly long skin contact, and then are aged in cask (tonneaux) or in barriques, on the lees, for over a year prior to bottling.
While Silvano spent ten years working with a big Barolo producer, on returning to the family estate, he was determined to make wine which reflected the richness and particular compostion of his own soil. Great attention to viticultural details in caring for the leaves and shoots, keeping yields low, and frequent tillage, ensures the production of wines whose flavour richness and elegance are characteristics already present in each bunch of grapes.
The hills of the Langhe, where Silvano Bolmida's vineyards are located, formed the floor of an ancient sea 15 Million years ago. Because of this ancient maritime influence, the sandy soils where he grows the grapes for his Barbera and Barolo wines are studded with fossilized remnants of sea creatures contributing a mineral depth to the wines.
