Valva Martínez de Toda is a young and innovative winemaker responsible for the wonderful Catalan white wine Las Cuadras Viognier & Muscat.
The vineyards that produce Las Cuadras are located in the Costers del Segre area of Catalonia in north eastern Spain. About 2 hours’ drive west of Barcelona, Costers del Segre is poised midway between two driving forces of the Iberian climate: the heat of the peninsula’s interior and the cooling effects of the sea. Las Cuadras 71 ha of vineyards are spread over rugged ground at an elevation of 300m above sea level. The vineyards have a clay-limestone soil that grapevines love.
Like all the best winemakers, Valva Martínez de Toda prioritises the quality of her fruit, insisting that great wine is made in the vineyard. She has experimented with various varieties including Tempranillo, Syrah, Merlot, Pinot Noir, Cabernet Sauvignon, Viognier, Chardonnay, and Muscat. In Las Cuadras Viognier & Muscat the two grapes complement each other, benefitting from the sun and soil of Costers del Segre.
But Valva doesn’t stop at dedicated vineyard management. She has equipped the cellar at Las Cuadras with the last word in modern winemaking, including an organoleptic laboratory to help determine optimal ripeness and maturation. The wines develop at a stable temperature in 300 litre barrels. All this careful effort in the vineyards and cellars pays off with intensely flavoured, sophisticated wine.
