Mark Lloyd, the great Australian winemaker, produces his wines to reflect his strong social consious - as environmentally efficient as possible, with nothing lost in the taste. The nose shows redcurrant, cherry, dark chocolate and earthiness. Hints of licorice and spice lead into a medium bodied, juicy palate that showcases the blend of Shiraz and Sangiovese within this red wine.

A beautiful coastal drive from Adelaide to McLaren Vale will
lead you to the postcard-perfect Coriole estate. The
wonderful welcome we received when we first met the
Lloyds at their boutique cellar door made us immediately
fall in love with this organic family winery. The region's deep
red soils produce richly coloured and textured red wines.

Behind the scene, at McLaren Vale's picturesque Coriole
Vineyard, it's a family affair - with winemaker Mark Lloyd
currently at the helm as General Manager of this successful
and increasingly diverse operation and his son Duncan now
taking over as Senior Winemaker. Duncan studied
winemaking before leaving McLaren Vale to work in
Tasmania and Margaret River, and then in Chianti and the
Rhône Valley.

Coriole is a McLaren Vale institution. Its history dates back
to the 1860s when the property's old house and barn were
first constructed. The Lloyd family acquired the land in 1968
and just two years later released the first vintage under the
Coriole label. Some of the Shiraz vines in use today date
back to 1919. The maxim which determines the Coriole
approach to winemaking is that "good wine is made in the
vineyard." While some wines are aged in new oak, the
Redstone and Sangiovese are aged in older oak, giving a
wide range of styles. Coriole is seen as a trailblazer of wines
in Australia. Organic practices have been adopted at Coriole,
and they will continue to expand organic production over
the next few years.

Creativity runs in the Lloyd family, and Mark's sister is a
highly regarded cheesemaker. If you're lucky enough to visit
sometime, you can enjoy the family's homegrown produce
in the restaurant at the vineyard. Try to make it in time for
the music festival held every May in the acoustically superb
barrel room


The soils are predominantly terra rosa soils (over 80%). These soils are shallow with red-brown earth over hard capped limestone. They tend to produce deeply coloured red wines with good structure and backbone that show great capacity for ageing
