Romanian Wines

A Land of Hope
Jancis Robinson MW calls Romania the "land of hope" when it comes to wine. Romania has one of the oldest wine-making traditions globally, and its viticulture dates back more than 6,000 years. Due to suitable climate, relief, and soils, viticulture became the locals’ main activity, primarily in the hilly areas.

The Carpathians Mountains are Romania's most significant natural gi. A variety of soil compositions in the foothills make for perfect growing conditions for the vines. The mountains also give shelter in the hills, which moderates the temperature similar to the Vosges mountains protecting Alsace.

Romania's wine production suƒered a low period when it was hit by both the phylloxera epidemic in the 19th and early 20th centuries, and a communist regime resulted in quantity over quality. Aer entering the EU in 2007, the future was looking bright. Today, Romaniais known for a diverse terroir with extraordinary potential to cultivate local and international varieties.  Romania is now one of the world's largest wine producers, with a growing number of quality winemakers producing lovely gems to uncover.
