Grenache, Carignan, Syrah
Priorat DOQ, Priorat DOCQ, Spain
Forest floor aromas, fruit and minerality are a welcome sign we are in the south of Priorat. Intense and fresh, balanced with some silkiness. This wine and its name are taken from the Coma Vella vineyard plot, the oldest one in the Vall de la Coma. Planted with Garnatxa Peluda (Downy Grenache) and Garnatxa del País (Grenache) together, this valley faces east and west towards the Mediterranean Sea and is blessed by a refreshing sea breeze, known as the Garbinada.
Marta Rovira Carbonell abandoned a career as an aeronautical
engineer in Munich to return home to Catalonia and take over the
family wine business that began in 1918. Marta quickly
introduced organic methods at Finca Mas D’en Gil, and has
moved towards biodynamic practices in the vineyard and winery.
Finca Mas D’en Gil’s natural approach to winemaking was
influenced by Marta’s grandmother Pilar, an expert in lunar cycles
and local medicinal plants.
In her family’s high-altitude vineyards Marta produces a vibrant
style of wine that stands in contrast with the heavy,
over-extracted Priorat wines of her father’s time. Marta’s Bellmunt
and Coma Vella make better use of the altitude and terroir at
Finca Mas D’en Gil, providing fresh and engaging examples of
Grenache and Carignan blends.
"Gritty, spicy, schisty berry aromas are composed, while this Garnacha-led blend feels saturated and layered. Spicy plum, herbal notes and black pepper make up the flavor profile, while this is strapping, peppery tasting and complex on the finish."
