Domaine Jean-Luc Mader Riesling

This Alsace Riesling opens clear and nicely aromatic, with smoky flavours and white-stone fruit and lemon. It is a finessed and salty dry wine revealing good freshness, grip and tension on the palate. Round and elegant.

Outside of the Mader winery is a sign that says “Nos vins sont secs” (Our wines are dry). A statement of intent from Jerome, who took over the family farm in 2005. It is made from 10% de-classified Grand Cru land from the great Rosacker vineyard. The wine is a blend from several sites of mostly limestone-based soil.

Intensity Light bodied Full bodied
Acidity Low High
Style Dry Sweet
Jean-Luc Mader

When any of the glossy wine magazines run an article on Alsace, more often than not the article is accompanied by a photograph of the 15th century church of Hunawihr. It is in this beautiful village that Jean Luc and Anne Mader have their domaine.

Up to 1980, Jean-Luc’s family used to sell all their grapes to the local co-operative. Having gained a degree in oenology from the University in Beaune, the young Jean-Luc and his wife Anne decided to make their own wine.

The Mader's are high quality - small quantity wine producers, and the Rieslings here are produced in the dry style, with potential to age for 5 years or more. Their Gewurtztraminer is considered a true Alsatian classic, intense but not too sweet. All vineyard work is carried out by hand and since 2005 their son Jerome is running the estate having gained a Diploma in Oenology. Since returning to the family estate Jerome has also converted all their vineyards to bio-dynamic viticulture.

Vins d'Alsace Mader

The calcareous, marnocalcular and sandy soils are expressed through the different grape varieties of Alsace, and often give the wines great character. Convinced that the wine is born in the vineyard and on a terroir, Jean-Luc and Jérôme have converted the estate into organic farming since 2007. No chemicals are therefore used.
