La Crau de ma Mère
Grenache, Syrah, Mourvèdre
Châteauneuf-du-Pape AOC , Rhone Valley, France
Food Pairing
An incredible red blend of Grenache, Syrah and Mourvèdre. Ripe black cherry, fig and mulberry are lavish and spicy — an opulent but elegantly integrated wine edged by fine tannins.
A wine created from a selection of very old vines including some 154-year-old Grenache vines located at Crau. Organic and biodynamically grown. The winery uses gravity and ferments in large concrete vats with natural yeast. Maceration is for 20-30 days, and each variety is vinified separately. Eighteen months in tank before assembling amplifies richness on the palate.

Vignobles Mayard is an outstanding property in the Rhône’s most renowned appellation, Châteauneuf-du-Pape. On our last trip to her family winery, Françoise Mayard told us how Vignobles Mayard may never have existed, were it not for her great-grandfather’s love for his ancestral vineyards.
Following the phylloxera epidemic that decimated the French wine industry in the late 1800s, many vignerons emigrated to the New World. Gratien Mayard, Françoise’s great-grandfather, was set to follow them. Gratien was about to step onto a US-bound ship in 1923 when he finally succumbed to the pull of his home and stayed to work the land. He painstakingly replanted the vineyards, vine by vine, and began making wine under the new Châteauneuf-du-Pape appellation.
The history of Vignobles Mayard perhaps explains the decision to rid of chemicals in the vineyards and to use more environmentally friendly, labour-intensive methods. Careful attention is paid to the vines throughout the year with de-budding and green harvesting essential. Respect is paid to the different climates throughout Châteauneuf-du-Pape with each of their 40 parcels of land vinified separately.
Today Françoise maintains her family’s reputation for hard work and excellent wine, always bearing in mind the sacrifice of previous generations.

"The Mayard family produce outstanding, luscious, yet complex wines at almost half the price of their near neighbours. This wine comes from La Crau, a famed vineyard in Chateauneuf-du-Pape. The blend is dominated by 65 per cent Grenache from 8-year-old vines. Syrah and Mourvedre make up the balance, giving wines of intense tar and spice, with touches of violets among the aniseed and crushed black fruits. It would be ideal with a robust braised oxtail and truffle mash or richer beef stews."
"This wine represents the producer's best efforts. Emerging from one of Chateauneuf du Pape's most hallowed sectors, La Crau, the hottest, most precious terroir of the appellation. This is a surprisingly fat, opulently textured offering with abundant quantities of liquorice and smoke-infused black cherry fruit, plenty of spice and a chewy succulent finish."

The vineyard covers 43 hectares of vines that include two large plots: a 21-hectare area situated south of the Châteauneuf du Pape appellation, at Grand Coulet, and an 8-hectare area located to the east, on the famous Crau plateau. The entire estate cover
