This case is a celebration of the most recognised female oenologist in Argentina and her signature wines. Susana Balbo was voted one of the "Ten Most Influential Women in the Wine World" in 2018 by Drink Business Magazine and has been instrumental in the transformation of quality table wines in Argentinean viticulture. Her wines have been among the favourites at Wines Direct for years running so much, so she needed a case dedicated solely to her work. Today, Susana Balbo and her daughter Ana and son José keep her winery a family affair. For her Crios label, meaning "offspring" Susana was inspired by a Mayan artefact, the three hands represent Susana and her two children. Ben Marco and Bodini are from young 2nd generation winemaker José Lovaglio, son of Susana Balbo.

1x Susana Balbo Signature - Mendoza (Organic methods, Vegan)

Grown at 1100 metres above sea level in the Uco Valley, one of the most exciting wine-growing areas in Argentina, this Malbec has elegance and the usual balance of Susana Balbo's wines. Long maceration on skins followed by 13 months in a combination of new and used French oak give a wine of subtle smokiness, with aromas of violets and flavours of blackcurrant and plum.

1x Crios Torrontés – Valle de Cafayate, Salta (Organic methods, Vegan)

Susana Balbo is known as 'The Queen of Torrontés' for her work in pioneering this indigenous grape and gaining it international recognition. She talks about breaking the rules in making a premium style of what was considered a simple, traditional wine. Grown at 1700 metres above sea level, the beautiful floral aromas typical of Torrontés lead to a crisp wine, not blousy as some can be, but dry, fresh and aromatic. All vines are farmed sustainably.

1x Crios de Susana Balbo - Mendoza (Organic methods, Vegan)

Susana Balbo talks about 'being brave'—graduating as the first female oenologist in Argentina in 1981, then going out to the world with her Malbec, before it was internationally known, and becoming a part of the worldwide success story that is Argentinian Malbec. Grown at over 1100 metres above sea level, hand-harvested, a long maceration period before ageing in French oak for nine months, gives a wine full of fresh fruit, designed for easy drinking across generations and food styles.

1x Crios de Susana Balbo - Mendoza (Organic methods, Vegan)
Cabernet Sauvignon

Taking risks is second nature to Susana Balbo, so planting Cabernet Sauvignon in this Malbec-dominated region was no different. A combination of excellent terroir and stellar  winemaking achieves her signature balance, almost 1000 metres above sea level, the grapes are hand-picked and aged in French oak for nine months. Earthy, mineral and balanced.

1x Benmarco - Mendoza (Organic methods, Vegan)

From Susana Balbo's son José, with grapes grown exclusively high up in the Uco Valley, where healthy, easy-to-manage vines produce low yields of high-quality fruit, creating  flavourful, full-bodied wines with generous acidity. Ageing in one-year-old French oak for 11 months, with extended lees contact, gives richness and complexity.

1x Bodini – Mendoza (Organic methods, Vegan)

Bodini is the result of a dream from young 2nd generation winemaker José Lovaglio, son of Susana Balbo, to make his mark. It is also the dream of the vineyard workers to work passionately in their sustainably-farmed high elevation vineyards. Five per cent of Bodini’s profits are donated to charities in Mendoza, including the Susana Balbo Wines Scholarship Foundation dedicated to providing education opportunities to winery worker families throughout Argentina.

Susana Balbo

The Queen of Torrontés

The most recognised and well-known female oenologist in Argentina, Susana Balbo has been instrumental in the transformation of quality table wines in Argentinean viticulture. She is best known for her innovation and progressive spirit in developing wines with unique character and quality, and she is the first Argentinean oenologist ever hired as a consultant by European wineries.

At Susana Balbo Wines, her family's winery in the famed Mendoza wine region of Argentina, Susana crafts her own signature label wines. They embody the complexity of various grapes along with her creativity as an oenologist to produce fine wines that express prestige, power and finesse. For her Crios label, which means "offspring" (as in children), Susana selected a word to express the notion that these are wines given loving care and attention deserving of her children. Benmarco Malbec is an exclusive from Susana Balbo's son José.

The three hands on the label, inspired by a Mayan artefact, represent Susana and her two children. By definition, Crios is to be enjoyed while still young and vibrant.

Susana Balbo Wines

Mendoza, where these vines are grown, is Argentina’s foremost wine region, and it is responsible for the country’s best bottles. The province is located at around thirty degrees south of the equator. This is the northern limit of wine grape production, any closer to the equator and the grapes would shrivel in the heat. The Andes, that lie between Mendoza and Chile, raise the land to an altitude that counterbalances the equatorial heat. The result is that the vineyards of Mendoza are some of the highest in the world, between 600m and 1,100m above sea level
