Alkoomi Cabernet Sauvignon-Merlot.

Soft and smooth, redolent with aromas of cassis, blueberry and savoury cigar box aromas; drinking well now although will gain complexity over the next three to five years. This beautifully managed vineyard is not far from the ocean in South West Australia. This gives it the perfect temperatures for vine growing. Husband and wife pair, Sandy and Rod Hallett, take advantage of this to produce some of the best and most pioneering red wines in Western Australia.

Merv and Judy Lange have been two of the great pioneers of the Western Australia wine industry and over thirty years have built Alkoomi into the top quality level of wine producers. They freely admitted to knowing more about wheat and sheep than grapes in the beginning, but went on to produce an excellent vineyard and also put plenty of time into understanding wine and tasting something new each day in pursuit of extending their wine knowledge.

As their knowledge grew, so did their reputation and their wines are now demanding much attention. The Alkoomi vineyard is located only 80kms inland from the Southern Ocean, resulting in good winter rains and dry ripening months. Summer days and evenings are cooled by fresh sea breezes, enabling ideal slow ripening of grapes. This climatic pattern is very similar to that of the best Bordeaux vintages. The estate is now run by their daughter Sandy and her husband, Rod Hallett.

When Rod married Sandy, he know nothing about the wine business. Once he began to get involved, he developed a passion for it. He decided to work with other winemakers to gain experience and hone his skills, before rejoining Sandy and taking over the running of Alkoomi in 2010.

In 1956 Dr Harold Olmo, the renowned Californian viticulturalist, had highly recommended the Frankland region for the planting of vines and the legendary West Australian winemaker, Jack Mann, had concurred. Dr Olmo had identified that the climate and deep, well-drained soils (gravelly loams) were similar to those of Bordeaux in France. The long, cool ripening conditions were perfect for the production of grapes of intense varietal character. With this in mind, Alkoomi's initial planting in 1971 of just one hectare under vine has been successfully transformed into 105 hectares (259 acres) of estate vineyard. The ethos of Alkoomi’s vineyard management has always been to favour quality over quantity, and to manage the property in an environmentally sustainable manner.
