"If you don't recognize the grape variety on a Portuguese wine label, it's a good thing." Wine Folly

Portuguese winemakers have a preserved heritage of more than 300 native grape varieties. Some say Portugal remains the last frontier of wine in Western Europe. Portuguese wines are often a blend of up to thirty grape varieties, most of which have no equivalent outside of Portugal. New regions and forgotten grape varieties re-experienced with Portugal's courageous winemakers determined to reveal the best of its country's abundance. There is so much to taste and discover in the multi-layered novelty and intrigue of Portugal's beautiful old vines. The exciting range of diverse wines from vines planted in all types of soil is at the soul of Portuguese winemaking.

2x Flor do Crasto 2019 - Douro DOC (Organic methods, Vegan)
Field Blend

Flor de Crasto is a young, fruit driven wine. With no oak contact, this wine is accessible at an early age, combining the character of great fruit with a very fresh and young palate.

2x Maias Tinto 2019 - Dão, Portugal (Organic methods, Vegan)
Mencia, Touriga Nacional, Alfrocheiro
This wine is more akin to a Beaujolais Cru. Soft, succulent red fruit, crème de cassis, a splash of cream, savoury dried herbs, and deeply refreshing acidity; we love this slightly chilled with barbeques, light lunches, etc. Mediterranean or Middle Eastern fare.

2x Pousio Selection - Alentejo DOC (Vegan)
Alicante Bouchet, Syrah, Trincadeira

Pousio took the opportunity to try an interesting blend from the Mars-like red soil so rare for Alentejo. The blend is made from Alicante Bouchet, a red flesh grape usually used in rosé but the combination of the unusual terroir and the aromatics of Syrah lends a fresh and silky red fruit taste, with full round tannins. This wine is very approachable and delicious.

2x Crasto - Douro DOC (Organic methods, Vegan)
Viosinho, Rabigato, Gouveio

This is the Chablis of the Douro. From a careful selection of 40% Viosinho; 30 % Gouveio; 30% Rabigato. Hand-harvested and fermented in stainless steel tanks, with prolonged time on lees resulting in a very fresh and fragrant modern style of wine. On the nose, grassy aromas along with citrus and asparagus. A wine with an extraordinarily fresh, crisp and pleasant palate.

2x Pessoa Da Vinha' Summer Wine' - Vinho Verde DOC (Organic methods, Biodynamic methods, Vegan)

This is Vinho Verde but not as you know it. Jorge Gonçalves learned his winemaking in Germany. So when he returned home to Portugal with his sommelier wife Lívia Novais, they decided to make Vinho Verde but single varietal Loureiro and make it Kabinett style. Fermented in stainless steel tanks and the first wine of the summer. Perfectly balanced between sweetness and freshness, lively and elegant. As Jorge said, "Perfect for drinking and looking out over the waves."

2x Pousio Selection - Alentejo DOC (Vegan)
Antão Vaz, Verdelho, Alvarinho

Pousio, a family-run 45-hectare estate, with vineyards sitting perfectly between the separation of two tectonic plates, with pure red iron-rich soil not typical in Alentejo. This is an Albarino blended with local Antão, fermented in stainless steel tanks giving a very clean crisp wine. There is an intense bouquet of stone fruit and tropical fruit with a long and vibrant finish.

Miguel Roquette

The Duoro Valley in Portugal is one of the most improbable regions for grape growing in the wold. Sheer cliffs overlook the sleepy river as it cuts its way from Spain to the Atlantic and soils of crumbling, flaky schist withstand tortuously hot summers and skin-cracking winters. But clinging to the valley sides, at gasp-inducing angles, is the stunning vineyard of the Quinta do Crasto run by brothers Miguel and Tomas Roquette

The region is so beautiful that it is demarcated as a world heritage site. The quinta (Portuguese for ‘vineyard’) has been in the Roquette family for over a century and the ancient history of the site is signified in the name Crasto, coming from the latin castrum, a Roman fort or castle.

Location, location, location!

But it’s not just for the view that we import Crasto wines. The vineyard sits high-up on the northern side of the Douro, thus at a southerly aspect to the sun. The wines from just across the river tend to be more tannic and austere due to poorer sunlight, while the Crasto brother’s wines are deeper, fruitier and much more intense. This is why we visit any new vineyards that we work with. It is just so important to witness all those particulars that conspire to make a plot remarkable rather than just acceptable.
