Pierre Clavel

Pierre Clavel

Domaine Clavel is run by Pierre Clavel. His father, Jean Clavel, was once director of the Syndicat des Coteaux du Languedoc, responsible for the creation of the Coteaux du Languedoc AOC, and consequently an influential figure in the region. Despite this the family owned no vineyards until Pierre established himself at what was called Mas Calage, but is now Domaine Clavel.

At that time he was young guy ready to accept the work and responsibilities of an empty field, rare enough at a time when the wines of the Coteaux du Languedoc and the South in general, were not well regarded by the French connoisseurs, not to mention the export markets.

Before becoming a winemaker, Pierre worked at a variety of jobs, including tending sheep in the hills close to where he now makes wine. A bit of a hippy at heart, we can reap the benefits of his proletarian ideology, as he is determined that his excellent wine will be affordable for all.

  1. Domaine Clavel Les Garrigues. Grenache, Syrah, Mourvedre

    Coteaux du Languedoc A/C

When I taste this red wine I am immediately reminded of the wines of Châteauneuf-du-Pape, but without the associated price. The vineyard is situated outside Montpellier on a glacial deposit which mirrors the soil I observed in the Châteauneuf-du-Papes appellation. The wine exudes concentrated, rich ripe Grenache, Syrah and Mourverde fruit. A vanilla spice leads to a wonderful dark berried finish.

  2. Domaine Clavel Le Mas. Grenache, Syrah, Mourvedre

    Coteaux du Languedoc A/C

A hugely attractive red wine with soft mellow black fruits spiced with cinnamon thanks to the blend of Grenache, Syrah and Mourvedre. A lovely finish.
