Wine Makers

Pedral by José Moren Galindo

Valdeorras DO is one of the oldest wine producing regions in Galicia, Northern Spain. Winters are cold and summers are warm, Godello and Mencia grapes flourish alongside some more unusual varieties including Palomino, Sousón and Garnacha Tintorera.

At an altitude of over 600 meters lies Bodegas Santa Marta, a boutique winery that is proudly enveloped by 50 year old vines. The slate and sand soil, a characteristic of the region, adds a subtle minerality to the wines produced here by winemaker José Moreno Galindo.

José has grown up on this land and from a young age helped his father nurture the vines planted by his grandfather back in the late 60’s. The grapes harvested would have originally been sold on to local wineries for medium to large scale wine production; this never sat right with José. He wanted to innovate and showcase the true potential of the terroir. In 1998 he set about building his own winery with the simple objective of producing some of the best regional wines possible, using modern winemaking techniques, from land and vines that have been proudly tended to and harvested for close generations. We believe he may have succeeded.
