Wine Makers

Chateau Haut Rian Rose by Michel Dietrich

Michel and Isabelle Dietrich own some of the best sites on the hillsides of Rions, all south or southeast facing on limestone soils. These are details which make all the difference to me when choosing a wine for our list. Both Michel and Isabelle come from a winemaking tradition-Michel's family are winemakers from Alsace, and Isabelle's family are Champagne winemakers.

Taking his family experience, his qualifications from the universities of Beaune and Bordeaux, Michael set off to work with an Australian winery for 7 years before establishing Chateau Haut Rian in 1988. These are the other details which set this wine apart. A skillful winemaker, with experience in the very different regions of Alsace and Australia, he produces a range of meticulously made wines at a great price.

Owen Murphy from Wines Direct spent the harvest at Chateau Haut Rian, so saw at first hand the care and attention required to produce these lovely wines, finishing each evening with a nice drop to accompany Isabelle's excellent cooking!

Press Reviews

"Quite complex with a good heft of strawberry and redcurrant fruit. Merlot and Cabernet working well together; quite "serious" for rosé." Ernie Whalley, Sunday Times.

"Weighty for a rosé with plenty of ripe fruit such as tinned strawberries, cherry and pear, yet it stays tangy and fresh." Martin Moran, Sunday Times, July 2013

"Chateau Haut Rian is one of the best value producers of entry-level Bordeaux. The white is always brilliant value. This rosé is also exceptional value for money. quite deep in colour, with a vibrant nose of ripe strawberries; the palate oozes with freshly crushed raspberries and strawberries. This packs a lot of flavour into a lightish wine. Probably better with richer dishes but delectable on its own." John Wilson, The Irish Times.

"This has featured in summers past and went down very well with the tasters. "Love this - definitely one for lunch al fresco" said one. Light, fresh, juicy red fruits with a dry finish." John Wilson, Irish Times.
